No Bad Sex.

Let's just dive right in.
I was having a conversation with a friend and she was telling me about how she felt that her generation has lost all sense of romance and has rather drifted to glorifying something she called "hook-up culture". The idea that meaningless sexual encounters are the theme of the day.

That people want all the perks that come with a relationship without none of the commitment. The idea that she lived in a period where relationships have lost their importance and how she was disgusted by it. She went on to tell me a brief story about how her father used to catch a bus and travel a considerable distance just to see the girl he liked who also happened to be the mother of said friend.

I conceded that the world has become partially desensitized to the idea of sex but is that really a bad thing? I'm not saying pornography should get a daytime TV slot I'm just saying if people treated sex as a normal part of life and educated one another on the matter wouldn't we all be a little better off?

I told her there was no better time to be alive than now, why travel 60 kilometers to see someone you like when we have the luxury of texting them? basically, walking around with your favorite person in your pocket and always at your fingertips?
This of course isn't to take away from the importance of physical human interaction but to simply emphasize and point out how fortunate we are to live in the era of the bullet train and the video call. We are literally living someone's wildest dream.

People adapt and evolve with the times. Being hung up on the idea of some picture-perfect movie ending romance and even going as far as to say "if i were born 40 years ago I would have been happier" is as Trump would put it Fake News. If you were born 40 years ago you would have been born into Apartheid... Are you soft in the head? Rather than be upset at the world for changing why not find a portion of it that suits your needs and call it home.

  1. I believe you may have missed the essence of what she may have been trying to say. The world becoming “partially desensitized” to sex is not a bad thing, the world idolizing sex is.
The examples given by you both are that of old age and new age courting techniques, the only difference (besides the methods) is that old age courting would, on most occasions, ultimately conclude in “dating” and/or marriage. Today however, that’s not the case.
New age courting would lead to “hook up culture” whereby the goal is getting to know the other person well enough, treating them like a partner to ultimately have sex and then leave or carry on having sex but seeing them as nothing but a sex partner, even though you act and/or communicate as more, “the perks that come with a relationships without none of the commitment” as your friend has put it.
We draw people in under the pretense of long term and/or “making things official” by courting but will not allow it to be anything but because we could do without the “pressures” of a title or having to assure anyone of longevity, all under the name of “I’m not ready to be in a relationship” or “I’m just trying to have fun” to name a few excuses. It’s like baking dough into a cake but refusing to put icing on it, so as to not have it be categorized as a cake.
